7 ways to make your Baby smarter during Pregnancy: How to have an intelligent Baby
Sometimes you meet people who make you think: something must have gone wrong with that guy or gal’s brain development.
And so, as a pregnant woman, you instinctively ask your: hold on a second, is there anything i can do while i am pregnant to make my baby smarter? Yes! And the answer is, yes there is: and in this video, we are going to tell you what exactly you can do to support baby’s brain development in your womb.
This is a pregnancy and birth consultant and tcm therapist and that’s a researcher and science geek and we help expecting mommies and their babies naturally and science based.
So, how can you make your baby smarter? Alright, so, before we start, please keep in mind that the development of your baby’s brain depends on several factors.
There are maternal factors, fetal factors and also placental factors.
And unfortunately, not all of them are under your control.
So, for example: among others, your baby’s brain development is influenced by genetics which is a maternal factor.
And let’s face it: there is not really anything you can do when it comes to your genes, right?
But please don’t get us wrong here! We are not saying that if you are dumb, your baby is gonna be dumb as well! That is by no means what we are trying to say here.
All we are trying to say is that there are factors that influence your baby’s brain development which you may not be able to control.
But there are things that you can do to support baby’s brain development in your womb.
So, the first thing to do is to keep your thyroid levels in check! Only recently, scientists found that thyroid hormones of the mother are actively involved in the baby’s brain development in the womb.
And so, if you suffer from a thyroid dysfunction or a disease, such as hashimoto, it could have an impact on the baby’s brain development if untreated.
And that’s a great example of the impact of genetics that we mentioned earlier, right? Because if someone in your family has or had a thyroid dysfunction, you are at a higher risk of such dysfunctions as well, right? That said, it is not so much those known cases of thyroid dysfunctions or diseases that are concerning.
The actual concern are milder cases because then, you may not even be aware that you suffer from it and your doctor may not do anything about it.
So, that’s why we are saying: keep your thyroid levels in check!
And maintaining a good thyroid function actually brings us to the next thing to do to make your baby smarter.
Take care of your nutrient supply! There are certain nutrients that are involved in baby’s brain development.
Iodine is a good example because it is known to control the thyroid function.
And as we now know, thyroid hormones are involved in baby’s brain development.
There are also nutrients such as fatty acids which a developing brain needs to produce energy.
Moreover, there are nutrients that baby’s body needs for the actual development of the brain, such as folic acid or vitamin d and other nutrients.
But more about this in one of our others article.
But the key take-away here is that: if you want your baby to become smarter, then you have to make sure that your baby receives certain nutrients.
And since nutrients are being supplied to the baby through the blood flow from the placenta to the baby, another way to make your baby smarter is by exercising.
Actually, exercising can potentially help with the baby’s brain development in several ways: first, exercising can increase the nutrient supply but also the oxygen supply to the baby.
And second, some studies found that exercising also seems to directly support baby’s brain development by increasing the number of neurons in the part of your baby’s brain which is related to a person’s memory and also to learning.
So, exercising could make your baby smarter because you sort of create a better environment in your womb for baby’s brain development.
Talking about environment in your womb.
The next thing to do is keeping your baby in your womb for longer.
Women are often devastated when they are 37 or 38 weeks pregnant but don’t see any signs of labor.
Understandably, i should add.
But the reality is that if your baby stays in there for longer, you give baby’s organs time to mature before they have to work without the support of your placenta and your body in the outside world.
That is particularly true for baby’s lungs as well as for certain reflexes, right? But also for baby’s brain development.
And so, ideally, your baby stays in there at least until week 39 unless of course, there are medical problems that require that your baby to get out of there earlier.
But basically if you are ever worried in week 38 that you don't see any signs of labor, try to see it from this point of view: a smart baby is what you will get in return.
The next thing to try is an aromatherapy massage.
Now, it may be counterintuitive that this should help with baby’s brain development.
But here is why this seems to help: it is very well researched that stress, and in particular, anxiety can have adverse effects on the baby’s development, including the development of the brain.
But an aromatherapy massage is a great way to reduce that anxiety.
There is even research about that.
Because the combination of touch and scent has a profound relaxation effect on the mother that also extends to the baby.
So it basically shuts down the release of those harmful stress hormones that may negatively impact baby’s brain development.
The next thing to do is to take care of a good night sleep! We are not gonna lie to you: it is still not very well researched, in how far sleep affects the baby’s brain development.
But there is some evidence that sufficient sleep at any stage of pregnancy is critical for the development of cognitive and emotional functions in the baby.
In fact, when it comes to sleep, it seems that it’s not so much about sleep quality but more about that you get enough sleep although it depends a bit on the person what enough sleep means.
But like sleeping for 4 hours a night for a longer period of time will not be enough sleep, right? So, yes, sleep duration is more important than the quality of sleep.
We also say this because the studies about the impact of the quality of your sleep on your baby's brain development are a bit wishy-washy to be honest with you.
And i mean, let’s be honest: if it were true that the quality of sleep has an impact on baby’s brain development, we would all be dumb, right? I mean who is able to have a good night sleep when your belly is basically a moving rock that keeps hitting you at night.
I remember those nights very well.
The next thing to do is talking to your baby in your womb!
Most people only think about the iq when talking about baby’ brain development.
However, there is also a social and emotional component to it.
And researchers found that when you talk with your baby in the womb, you lay the foundation for their social and emotional development.
It may even help boost language and memory skills later in their life! So, do talk to your baby as often as you can!
And then finally because parents keep asking us that: is it true that music helps with baby’s brain development in the womb? Well, our personal opinion is that it is still unclear at this stage.
The results of studies are very mixed, right? Some scientists claim that music can trigger happy chemicals that keep your baby calm and increase the concentration power.
But this is something that is yet to be confirmed by other studies.
Personally, we believe that music can help indirectly with baby’s brain development, if it helps you relax.
Because then we have a similar effect as with an aromatherapy massage, right?
But we are talking about relaxing music, okay? If you listen to heavy rap beats of people who mention the word motherf**** more often in one track than i do in an entire lifetime, that’s probably counterproductive!
Now, keep in mind that it is important to take care of the basis in your body first before you try less important methods.
In other words, keeping your thyroid values in check and taking care of a good nutrient supply, for instance, is more important than talking to your baby or than listening to music.
So these are things that you should take care of before you do anything else.
So, if you wanna know which nutrients your baby urgently needs during your pregnancy, read the article that pops up now.
