It is not always that easy to keep your baby healthy in there while you are pregnant because some things, like medical conditions for instance, are just not under your control, right? Right however, there are many things that you can do, to increase the chances that your baby stays healthy in there.
So, in this article, we are going to talk about 10 ways to keep your baby healthy during your pregnancy.
And don’t worry! We are not gonna talk about standard things that you already know, such as that you should not drink any alcohol, or do drugs or smoke.
Yeah, good point! This is nathalie a pregnancy and birth consultant and tcm therapist and that’s mathias a researcher and science geek and we help expecting mommies and their babies naturally and science based.
So, let’s talk about how we can keep your baby healthy during your pregnancy.
KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS
Okay, so, the first thing you should do to keep your baby healthy in your womb is knowing the warning signs.
Unfortunately, this is something that we have observed over and over again: women who observe certain symptoms in their bodies, but they don’t act because they don’t know that what they observe is actually a warning sign, right?.
So for example, headaches can be totally normal during a pregnancy.
However, when it is severe and persistent, please don’t just use pain killers and tell yourself everything is fine, okay? There can be medical reasons for your head aches and sometimes, those medical reasons can have an impact on your baby.
And by the way, at the end of this article, we are gonna refer you to another article in which we tell you what typical warning signs are during a pregnancy.
DONT RELY ON THE INTERNET
Now, having said that, it is also important that you do not solely rely on google or youtube to look up certain signs.
You know, usually, what happens is that when a mom-to-be observes a certain sign during her pregnancy that she is not sure about if it is normal or not, first thing she does is: she googles it, right?.
Problem is: on google and also we here on youtube, we can only give you general information that may apply to most women.
However, it is important to note that one and the same sign may be normal in one woman but not in another woman.
So let’s say, that you are 35 weeks pregnant and that your baby suddenly does not move as much anymore.
And you read that blogpost from someone who tells you that it is normal that babies don’t move as much when it’s really hot out there.
Well, that could be, right? But how do you know that this applies to your own baby in that very moment? How do you know there isn’t another maybe medical reason why your baby suddenly does not move as much anymore.
And so, this is why we are saying: please don’t solely rely on information that you find on the internet.
Talk with your doctor or midwife about anything that you may find concerning.
COUNT BABYS KICKS
Talking about baby’s movements: another way to make sure that baby is healthy in there is to count baby’s kicks.
Of course, this is something that you won’t be able to do throughout your pregnancy.
But the american congress of obstetricians and gynecologists, for instance, recommends counting baby’s kicks from week 28, or week 26, if you are high risk or pregnant with multiples.
You don’t have to do this every single day.
But it can be a big help to find out if baby is doing well in there.
PRENATAL CARE APPOINTMENTS
The next important thing to keep your baby healthy in there is to not miss any prenatal care appointments.
Actually, we thought that it is pretty obvious that you should do that.
But we regularly meet women who don’t take this too seriously which is why we wanted to mention it again.
Now, of course, even an ultrasound cannot always determine every single problem in your womb, right, because it is a very difficult task for a sonographer to read the data.
However, knowing what’s going on in there by actually looking at it can certainly help you detect certain problems and it can potentially help you keep your baby healthy.
The next important thing to do is to be careful with your diet now, of course we know that you know that you should be careful with your diet.
We just want to make you aware of how your diet can help you keep your little one healthy: so, first, when you are pregnant, there are certain foods that you should not eat, such as unpasteurized milk products because they could contain bacteria.
So, you keep your baby healthy by avoiding those.
And second, you can also keep your baby healthy during your pregnancy by providing your body with additional micronutrients, for example, by taking supplements, right? A good example here is folic acid.
Folic acid can help prevent some major birth defects of your baby’s brain and spine.
And because this topic is so important, we recorded a article on it.
We are gonna refer you to it later in this article.
Talking about nutrients.
OXYGEN
The next thing to do to keep your baby healthy in your womb is increasing the nutrient and oxygen supply to your baby.
Obviously, in order to grow in there, your baby needs both, enough oxygen and the nutrients that you provide your body with.
What many women don’t know though is that both is linked to your blood circulation.
Well, it's actually your placenta that provides for your baby, right? However, your placenta is just the connecting piece, if you will, that connects your own blood circulation with the blood circulation of your baby.
And eventually, as nathalie just said, everything comes down to your blood because it’s your blood that carries oxygen and nutrients to your baby through your placenta, right? And there are many ways to increase the oxygen and nutrient supply to your baby.
We show you how in another article that we are going to refer you to at the end of this article.
PETS AND RODENTS
The next thing to do to keep your baby healthy in your womb is to be wary about pets and rodents.
If you have a cat or pet rodents, such as a hamster, for instance, please tell someone else to care for them while you are pregnant.
Their droppings could contain a harmful virus that can lead to pregnancy-related complications.
In addition, dirty cat litter could also contain a parasite that can cause an infection called toxoplasmosis.
Not a good idea if you are pregnant.
So, the best thing would be to stay away from certain pets, in particular, pet rodents, but also turtles, for instance.
Stay away from their droppings and let someone else take care of them while you are pregnant.
MEDICINES
The next thing to do is to be careful with medicines.
And, really, i am not only talking about prescription medicines.
I am also talking about over-the-counter medicines.
We are often surprised about how inconsiderate some pregnant women are when it comes to otc medicines.
Problem is: just because you don’t need a prescription does not make them overly safe, particularly, when you are pregnant, right? So, please always talk with your provider first before you take them! Exactly.
Talking about medicine.
CHORNIC HEALTH CONDITIONS
The next thing to do is monitor chronic health conditions.
Certain chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, for instance, can increase the risk of certain pregnancy-related complications.
Therefore, it is important to monitor those conditions together with your provider and to actively manage those conditions while you are pregnant – as far possible.
MENTAL HEALTH AND STRESS
And then of course, please also take care of your mental health and stress.
We know it sounds so obvious but many women take this too lightly.
There are numerous studies which show that stress, particularly, the kind of stress that is caused by mental health issues, can have a profound negative impact on your baby’s health in your womb.
I am even talking about developmental problems, okay? Therefore, please don’t take this lightly! If you suffer from mental health issues, please seek help! And on top of that, please find ways to relax during your pregnancy, such as yoga, exercising, meditation, whatever works for you! Right.
